Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing political activist and analyst in the United States, has been shot dead. He is a powerful ally of US President Donald Trump.
He was shot in the neck while giving a speech at a university in the US state of Utah on Wednesday. The bullet hit him in the neck. He later died in hospital. The governor of Utah has called the incident a political assassination.
It is not clear whether the suspect has been identified or arrested. However, FBI Director Kash Patel said on social media that the person involved in the incident is in custody. However, minutes later, Utah Public Safety Commissioner Bo Mason said at a press conference that the suspect is still at large. An FBI member was also present at the press conference.
Donald Trump wrote on social media, "The great and legendary Charlie Kirk is no more. No one had a greater ability to understand or win the hearts of the youth of America than Charlie. Everyone loved and admired him, especially me. Now he is no longer with us."
Some videos of the incident have been circulating on social media. In one video, 31-year-old Charlie Kirk was speaking at a ceremony at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, at 12:20 p.m. local time. Suddenly, gunshots rang out. Kirk reached for his neck and fell from his chair. The audience started running in panic.
Another video showed Kirk bleeding from his neck shortly after he was shot. Reuters has not confirmed the authenticity of the videos.
This is the latest in a series of attacks on political figures in the United States, following two assassination attempts on Trump last year, and is a sign of a sharp increase in political violence in the country.
"This is a dark day for our state, a sad day for the country. I want to be clear, this is a political assassination," Utah Governor Spencer Cox said at a news conference.
Charlie Kirk planned to organize 15 events called 'America Comeback Tour' at various universities in the United States. As part of this plan, he went to Utah Valley University for the first time yesterday. Charlie often organizes such events. A large number of students participate in these events. During this time, he directly exchanged views and debated with the students on various issues.
A video shows Charlie Kirk being questioned by a bystander about gun violence seconds before he was shot.
Police have not yet released any information about possible suspects.
Charlie Kirk is the co-founder of Turning Point USA, the largest conservative youth organization in the United States, which played a key role in rallying young voters for Donald Trump in the November presidential election.
