US President Donald Trump has said that the United States has "lost sovereignty" over the city after the victory of Zoharan Mamdani, the new mayor of New York. He even accused Mamdani of turning New York into a "communist city" with his victory.

Trump also said, "We'll take care of it." He did not explain what he meant, but instead claimed that the country's largest city would now become a "communist city."

“We want New York to succeed,” Trump said. He hinted that Mamdani might be given some assistance from the U.S. government. “We’ll help him a little bit, maybe a little bit,” Trump said.

Trump made the remarks in a speech marking the one-year anniversary of his election victory over Democrat Kamala Harris. "We rescued our economy, we reclaimed our freedoms, and we saved our country together on that glorious night a year ago," he said.

Mamdani, on the other hand, won the New York mayoral election despite harsh criticism from the business community, conservative media and Trump. Mamdani said on Wednesday that he was interested in discussing the cost of living with Trump.

The Muslim immigrant politician surprised everyone by going from being a virtual 'outsider' to being elected mayor. He jokingly said, "I haven't been congratulated by the White House yet."

Despite all this, President Trump has refused to take responsibility for Tuesday's results. In a post on his social media account Truth Social, he claimed that some anonymous pollsters said the Republicans' defeat was due to the government shutdown and his own name not being on the ballot in the election.
