Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has said that the United Nations Security Council is now ineffective. He made the remarks at a joint press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that the recent major wars have been started by countries that are themselves members of the Security Council, yet they have been silent spectators during the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
This information was reported by TRT World in a statement on Saturday (October 25) night.
"Today the UN Security Council is not doing anything, not at all," Lula said at a joint press conference after meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. "Every major war in recent times has been started by countries that are themselves members of this council. They are fighting these wars without any consultation, without any accountability."
He said that today's United Nations has "stopped working," leaving the world without effective global leadership. Lula asked, "How can these countries remain silent when there has been a long-term genocide and humanitarian disaster in Gaza, Palestine?"
Incidentally, President Lula is currently in Kuala Lumpur on a three-day official visit. This is his first visit to Malaysia since returning to power in January 2023. In addition to attending the ASEAN summit, he is also scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump.
Lula also expressed his anger at global superpowers, saying they are not keeping their promises to combat climate change, which is hurting the poorest people the most.
On the other hand, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that Lula is a leader who speaks for the dignity of working people, social justice and humanity. His call to end the suffering of the people of Gaza and take effective action on the climate crisis is commendable.
After the meeting, Anwar said on social media, "We agreed to increase cooperation in trade and investment, energy, food and agricultural technology, education, culture, and high-tech sectors."
