Students from the engineering faculties of various universities, including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), have blocked Shahbagh intersection with three demands. They took up the road position at around 3:30 pm on Tuesday. They also protested against the death threats against former BUET student Engineer Rokonuzzaman Rokon.
Earlier yesterday, students announced the 'Blockade of Engineers' program. As per the previous announcement, the students blockaded Shahbagh on Tuesday. Traffic movement in Shahbagh has been stopped after the road blockade. This has caused traffic jams in Shahbagh and surrounding areas.
The students demanded that legal action be taken against those who attacked and threatened to kill BUET student Rokon. They also demanded the formation of a commission for three-point reforms in the engineering sector.
The students' demands are:
1. There is a 33 percent quota for diploma engineers in the ninth grade. That quota should be abolished and appointments to this position should be made on the basis of merit.
2. There is a 100 percent quota for Diploma Engineers in 10th grade, it should be abolished and opened to all.
3. The title of Engineer cannot be used without a B.Sc degree. If this title is used, legal action will be taken.
