Chhatra Dal-backed panel at DUCSU took oath on eight issues

The candidates of the Chhatra Dal-backed panel took an oath on eight issues, including maintaining political etiquette and mutual respect if elected to DUCSU, and reflecting a democratic attitude in dealing with political opponents.

The candidates took the oath at the bottala in front of the Dhaka University Arts Building around 1 pm on Sunday. Md. Abidul Islam, the vice-president (VP) candidate of the Chhatra Dal-backed panel in the DUCSU elections, administered the oath.

This panel's General Secretary (GS) candidate Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim, Assistant General Secretary (AGS) candidate Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed, and 205 candidates for various positions in DUCSU and Hall Sangsad took the oath.

The oath-taking ceremony began with the national anthem. The first oath stated that the political culture of the past fascist regime, which included the abhorrent mass room system, guest room torture, forced participation in political programs, and persecution for dissent, would never be allowed to return to the campus at any cost, in order to build a joyful, livable, and safe Dhaka University campus for every student.

The second oath pledged to fight like their predecessors. It said that just as they stood in front of the barrel of a gun in the bloody days of July 2024 in the final battle of the fascist regime of the past decade and a half, just as their predecessors led the anti-dictatorship movement in 1990, just as they led the independence movement of Bangladesh in 1971, just as their predecessors played a leading role in the language movement of 1952 and the partition movement of 1947, in the same way, if in the future the path of democracy, independence, sovereignty or the liberation of the people of the country is blocked by any black force, they will resist that evil force with utmost strength and intelligence.

The third pledge talks about the protection of women. It states that the Dhaka University campus will be made a safe, orderly and secure area for sisters, i.e. female students. Where they will be ensured safe housing, access to healthcare, establishment of equal rights and above all, empowerment.

The fourth phase highlights the provision of legal seats. It states that unremitting efforts will be made to ensure legal seats in halls, affordable healthy and nutritious food, quality healthcare, cleanliness and effective waste management, as well as easy and convenient transportation and commuting for all students of the university.

The fifth pledge to ensure online safety was made. It states that they will continue to make maximum efforts to prevent all types of online-based mischief, including cyberbullying, misinformation, disinformation, and fake news, to provide online safety to Dhaka University students.

The sixth oath pledged to build a prestigious university. It states that they will devote themselves to education, research, improving the quality of the learning environment, expanding sports and cultural activities, and accelerating students' career-building activities, with the determination to build the vital Dhaka University as a modern and prestigious university.

The seventh point highlights the promise to maintain etiquette towards political opponents. It states that if elected as a representative of DUCSU, the cradle of the country's independence, sovereignty and democratic movement, they will maintain etiquette, courtesy and mutual respect within the internal political environment of DUCSU. They will always reflect the highest democratic attitude in their relationship and behavior with political opponents.

The pledge to keep every word of the oath is made in the last round. It says, 'We would like to say with the utmost sincerity and responsibility that each candidate of our panel takes every word of this oath with all our heart and soul. And we promise that if our candidates are elected, each of these oaths will be implemented before you through accountable and transparent actions of each one, Insha Allah.'

After the oath-taking ceremony, Abidul Islam Khan, on behalf of the panel, said, "We hope that the students will also take part in this oath out of the hope of a successful DUCSU and the conviction of a beautiful university. The students will make every candidate on their panel victorious by giving their valuable votes."
