September 7, was the last day of campaigning for the DUCSU elections. That time is over. Now Dhaka University is waiting for the DUCSU elections. Tomorrow, Tuesday, is the voting day.
Dhaka University is holding student representative elections again after six years. This is the first election for many of the current generation of the university. As a result, the campus is now bustling with activity surrounding the elections.
According to the Election Commission, voting will be held in 810 booths in 8 centers from 8 am to 4 pm. The total number of voters is 39,775. Of these, 20,873 are male and 18,902 are female. 471 candidates will contest for 28 posts. Of these, 62 are female candidates.
This time, visually impaired students will also have the opportunity to vote in Braille for the first time. Associate Returning Officer Sharmin Kabir said, "We have printed ballot papers in Braille for students who are visually impaired and can read Braille."
The interim government's chief advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has ordered the DU administration to provide all-out cooperation to ensure a peaceful environment in the elections.
On the other hand, the teachers' organization University Teachers Link (UTL) has made 10 proposals to prevent transparency and irregularities in the elections. The Teachers' Network held a press conference and made 10-point demands, expressing fears of irregularities.
Security has been tightened around the DUCSU elections. DU Metro Station will be closed from Monday afternoon. All entrances to the university will also be closed from 8 pm to 6 am on Wednesday. Only students, teachers, officials and employees with valid ID cards will be allowed to enter.
There have been some dramatic incidents surrounding this election. A VP candidate withdrew from the election in a press conference, supporting the Chhatra Dal-backed panel. Dr. Muhammad Shahidullah Hall VP candidate Masum Billal withdrew at the last minute and said, 'I have withdrawn from my position. I have voluntarily withdrawn. I know that the party is bigger than the worker, the country is bigger than the party.'
Meanwhile, some surveys claim that the Shibir-backed United Students Alliance is ahead. However, other candidates say that these surveys are one-sided and have been conducted to influence voters. Chhatra League is not participating in the elections this time as it is banned. As a result, the election environment has changed. Students say that the DUCSU elections are taking place after a long time, creating a festive atmosphere among them.
