The Jahangirnagar University Central Student Union (JACSU) and Hall Parliament elections are being held again after almost 33 years. Voting began at 9 am on Thursday. Voting will continue without interruption until 5 pm.
A festive atmosphere has begun across the campus surrounding the JACSU elections. All preparations have been made for a peaceful vote. Strict security measures have been taken across the campus surrounding the election. Since the government fell in the student-public uprising, the demand for electing a new leadership through elections and creating a harmonious environment among students has become strong. Students hope that the atmosphere of democratic practice will return to the campus through these elections.
There are 177 candidates in the Central Parliament and 445 in the House of Representatives in this election contest. Nine candidates are contesting for the post of VP and eight for the post of GS in the Central Parliament. The number of posts has been increased from 11 to 25 by amending the constitution. Earlier, there were 14 posts.
Out of 25 posts, six are reserved for female students. Such an initiative is to increase the participation of female students in leadership. JACSU elections are being held after 33 years. All the organizations active on campus are participating in the vote.
The army is the striking force in the elections. Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Ghani told reporters in the capital yesterday that maximum security measures have been taken to ensure the smooth conduct of the JACSU elections. Police, Ansar, BGB - all forces will be in the field. The army will also be on alert. If necessary, they will enter the university and perform their duties.
A special OMR machine will be used for counting the votes. The results will be displayed immediately on a large screen installed in the Senate Hall and updates will be given every hour at various places on the university campus. In addition, the results and instructions will be published on the university website and the Facebook page of the Public Relations Department.
