This year, the highest number of dengue patients were identified in the last 25 days of this month. As of Saturday, 16,296 people were admitted to hospitals with the infection. Earlier, the highest number of dengue infections this year was in September, with 15,866 people.
Experts say that the dengue outbreak has been prolonged this year due to seasonal changes and erratic rainfall. They fear that the situation is unlikely to improve in November and December.
According to the Department of Health, 659 people have been hospitalized across the country due to dengue fever transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes in the previous 24 hours till 8 am yesterday. However, no deaths have been reported during this period.
The department's notification said that among the newly identified patients, 126 are in Barisal division, 104 in Chittagong division, 170 in Dhaka division, 124 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 57 in South City Corporation, 31 in Khulna division and 47 in Mymensingh division.
So far this year, 259 people have died of dengue. At the same time, the number of infected people has reached 64,297. Of these, 31,393 have recovered from the hospital and returned home. 65.3 percent of the infected are men; 34.7 percent are women.
Earlier, 10,684 people were admitted to hospitals with dengue in July. 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June and 10,496 in August. Ten people died of dengue in January, three in February, seven in April, three in May, 19 in June, 41 in July and 39 in August. No patients died in March.
Although dengue incidence was relatively low at the beginning of the year, infections have been increasing since June. At that time, public health experts warned that the dengue situation could take a dire turn this year if necessary steps were not taken.
