Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman said, today one of the most important verdicts in the history of Bangladesh has been passed. In this verdict, the martyrs have got justice, the state has got justice, the prosecution has got justice. This verdict is a milestone in terms of responsibility towards the martyrs, towards the country, towards the people of this country, towards the constitution, towards the rule of law and towards the coming generations.
He made these remarks in immediate reaction after the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death on Monday (November 17, 2025).
He said, in the verdict of Sheikh Hasina's case, the martyrs have got justice, the state has got justice. The prosecution has got justice. The criterion of that justice is that the maximum punishment of death has been given to two accused in this case. One accused, who presented himself before the court as a royal witness, has been given a five-year prison sentence by the court on the basis of overall considerations.
He further said, "We think this verdict is a landmark verdict in the interest of fulfilling our responsibility towards the martyrs, towards the country, towards the people of this country, towards the constitution, towards the rule of law and towards the coming generations. This verdict will bring peace, this verdict is a message for the future. This verdict will be a milestone for justice and rule of law in Bangladesh."
The Attorney General said, they have reduced the five charges to three counts and sentenced them. According to the provisions of the law, the sentence will be effective from the day of arrest. The state will do everything that is legally required. The court has given a direction to compensate the families of the martyrs and the injured. They did not comment on the matter as the issue of banning the Awami League was not in this case.
He also said that all the properties of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been confiscated. He further said, "I am not aware of any country in the world, let alone Bangladesh, where there is an opportunity to appeal while absconding."
