Police are receiving indications of an organized network behind the shooting of Inqilab Mancha convener and potential candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency Sharif Osman Hadi the day after the announcement of the schedule for the 13th parliamentary elections.
Sources involved in the investigation claim that the attack was planned for several months and was intended to create major instability in the country; an escape plan was also put into effect immediately after the attack.
Police sources said that three people have been identified as involved in the incident so far. Among them, Chhatra League leader Faisal Karim Masud alias Rahul, who opened fire from behind a motorcycle, was the driver, Alamgir Sheikh. Before the incident, there was another person with these two while they were following Hadi (reckoning). His name is Rubel. He is said to be an activist of the Adabor Thana Swechchhasebak League.
Law enforcement agencies have also obtained photos of the three together at various public events held by Hadi. The photos have already been circulated on social media. Police said that all three are associated with Awami League-related politics.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies believe that the 'shooters' (the one who shot) Faisal Karim and Alamgir Sheikh fled to India through the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh within 12 hours of the incident. Having identified their possible location, the police conducted a raid on the border areas of Haluaghat, Dhobaura in Mymensingh and Nalitabari in Sherpur on Saturday night. From there, two people were arrested on charges of involvement in human trafficking and brought to Dhaka. They are Sanjay Chisim and Sibiron Deo.
A source said that during interrogation after his arrest, Sanjay Chisim said that between 1:30 am and 2 am on Friday, they helped smuggle two Bangladeshi nationals to India. Law enforcement officials believe that the two are Faisal and Alamgir.
