Shakib Al Hasan's life has been turned upside down in just six months of his political career . Shakib himself made his path even more difficult by getting involved in controversial films and clashes with the audience during the student-public movement in July-August last year. A murder case was filed against Shakib in the post-coup period. News of his corruption has also come to the fore.
In a recent interview with an English daily, Shakib spoke about his political career. Shakib believes that his decision to enter politics was not a mistake and if he contests the elections again now, he will win.
Shakib said about his decision to enter politics, "Look, the thing is, if joining politics was a mistake for me, then it would also be a mistake for anyone to join politics in the future. Doctors, barristers, businessmen—anyone can make a mistake if they join politics. Joining politics is the right of any citizen and anyone can do it. Whether people vote for you or not is up to them. When I joined, I think I was right and I still believe I was right. Because, my intention was to work for the people of Magura. I felt that I could do something for them. I also felt that the people of Magura wanted me."
Shakib said about winning the election, "I believe that a fair election was held in my constituency and I don't think that if I stand again, anyone else will win. So naturally, I don't see anything wrong with what I did. When I stood for election, I wanted the opportunity to serve the people of Magura. The people gave me that opportunity. Unfortunately, I couldn't serve them the way I wanted to. I have accepted that."
Shakib explained why he came into politics this way, 'I always think that if someone wants to bring about significant change, they have to come within the system. Because, how do you change it without being part of the system? If the people who are running the country now were outside the system, could they have brought about the changes they wanted?'
Shakib believes that if he stands for election again, he will win, "Look, many may say that my decision to enter politics was not right. But most of those who are saying this are not voters from my area. Magura voters think differently. I still believe that if I participate in the election again today, the people of Magura will vote for me again. Because they believe that I can do something for them. This is my belief and this is why I came into politics."
How was Shakib's six-month political life? When asked, Shakib replied, 'I was in politics for only six months. After the elections, I think I went to Magura for three days. I played cricket for four-five months and was out of the country for the same amount of time. So where did I find the time to get involved in politics properly?'
Shakib also revealed what former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled in the face of a mass uprising, had instructed him. "The Prime Minister told me, 'You don't have to do politics, just focus on cricket.' I followed that advice. I had no other agenda. I always thought that as long as I was in cricket, that should be my priority. I could have easily quit cricket and become a full-fledged politician. But my plan was to play in the Champions Trophy and then gradually focus on politics after understanding everything better. To work for the people."
