National Citizens Party (NCP) leaders have demanded the immediate reconstitution of the EC and local government elections. They made this demand at a protest rally organized by the NCP in Dhaka on Wednesday (May 21) afternoon.
NCP central member Al Amin Tutul said, "You won't get the people on your side by agitating for public welfare. One group has left, another group is waiting to eat. We want local elections so that everyone gets civic benefits."
Kalabagan representative Masum Billah said at the protest rally, "The current EC is doing questionable work and has been formed under illegal laws. We demand the restructuring of this EC."
He also demanded early local government elections.
Abu Abdullah, central joint secretary of the workers' wing of the National Citizens' Party, said, "We will not accept this EC formed illegally."
Rehana Akhter Ruma of Pallabi Police Station said, "We are forced to stand here. We are demanding a change in this EC."
Dr. Ishrat Jahan, the women representative of Ramna police station branch, said, "I am a mother, I have come here. We joined the NCP due to the failure of the big parties. I condemn this EC, they are supporting a big party."
"You will not stand in the way. If necessary, we mothers will sit and demand his resignation."
Saiful Islam, representative of Mirpur Model Police Station, said, "Today, people across the country have the same demand - a controversial decision has been taken regarding Dhaka South, we want the resignation of the EC. We want the EC to be reconstituted."
Mahin Sarkar, a representative of Uttara Purba Police Station, said, "The EC should be restructured and local government elections should be held first. This EC is running like the Hasina government. Hold local elections with a new EC, there will be no talk of national elections before that."
Jasim Nayed, a representative of Dhanmondi police station branch, said, "There has been no transparent election in the country. We wanted an EC acceptable to everyone. A party is doing whatever it takes to fill its stomach. ...People have not been getting services for eight months. For this, local government elections are needed."
Gendaria representative Kamrul Hasan said, "We have overthrown Hasina. It won't even take 15 seconds to overthrow you, where will you run?"
Mohammadpur representative Abu Sufian said, "This is a public demand. If the EC is restructured, everyone's voting rights will be ensured. That's why we want a new EC."
Earlier, at 12:15 pm, a protest rally by the National Citizens Party (NCP) began in front of the Election Building in Agargaon in the capital, demanding the reorganization of the Election Commission (EC) and the early holding of local government elections.
