Formal complaint filed with tribunal in Ashulia burning case

A formal complaint has been filed with the Registrar's Office of the International Crimes Tribunal in the case of the massacre and burning of six bodies in Ashulia on August 5 last year during the anti-discrimination student movement.

A hearing on the matter will be held on Wednesday at the International Crimes Tribunal-2.

Seven accused, including arrested police officers Abdullah Hill Kafi and Shahidul Islam, were produced before the tribunal in a prison van this morning. The prosecution received the investigation report of the case discussed on June 19. 16 people, including former MP Saiful Islam, have been charged in the formal complaint.

The accused are former MP Muhammad Saiful Islam, former Additional Superintendent of Police of Savar Circle Md. Shahidul Islam, former Additional Superintendent of Police of Dhaka District Abdullah Hill Kafi, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station AFM Sayed (Roni), former Inspector of Dhaka District Detective Branch (DB) North Md. Arafat Hossain, former Sub-Inspector of Ashulia Police Station Abdul Malek, former Sub-Inspector Arafat Uddin, former Sub-Inspector Sheikh Abjalul Haque, former Sub-Inspector Bishwajit Saha, former Sub-Inspector Kamrul Hasan and former Constable Mukul Chokder. Of these 11, 8 are in jail. Of these, seven were produced before the tribunal on Wednesday.

On August 5 last year, five people were killed in police firing in Ashulia, Savar. One person was also seriously injured. Later, the bodies of the five people and the injured person were put in a police van, doused with petrol and set on fire.

Those who were martyred at that time were Sajjad Hossain (Sajal), As Sabur, Tanzil Mahmud Sujoy, Bayezid Bustami and Abul Hossain. The identity of one more person could not be found.

The prosecution said that a case was filed with the International Crimes Tribunal on September 11, alleging crimes against humanity in this incident.

The investigation report of the case states that on August 5 last year at around 3 pm, five people were shot dead in front of Ashulia Police Station. Another person was seriously injured in the shooting. Later, one person was taken alive and five others were taken dead to a van. From there, the police took them to a police car. Later, the six people were set on fire in the police car.
