After blocking the railway line, Rabindra University students have blocked the Jamuna Bridge from 12 noon today, Thursday (August 14), demanding the speedy approval and full implementation of the Development Project Proposal (DPP) for the construction of a permanent campus.
Due to the blockade of the Sirajganj Highway on the west bank of the Jamuna Bridge, traffic on the Jamuna Bridge has been suspended, resulting in traffic from Dhaka to North Bengal and from North Bengal to Dhaka.
It is learnt that 18,000 vehicles from 22 districts of North Bengal cross the Jamuna Bridge every day. However, due to the blockade, massive traffic jams have been created on the road as the day progresses, causing extreme suffering to passengers and drivers.
The students demanded that the Development Project Proposal (DPP) for the construction of a permanent campus of Rabindra University be approved and implemented quickly. They also said that the movement will continue until their demands are met.
Earlier, on Wednesday (August 13), students blocked the railway tracks in Ullapara, Sirajganj. The program lasted from 9 am to 3 pm, resulting in the delay of various trains to Dhaka and North Bengal.
Teachers, students, officials and employees started the movement by boycotting the Rabindra University Day program on July 26. As part of the ongoing program, blockades, street plays, songs to break chains and symbolic classes were organized on the Bogranagarbari highway from 10 am to 12 noon for several days.
Still, without receiving any response, a human chain was formed at Hatikumrul Roundabout on Thursday and a highway blockade was held on Sunday, which closed the road connection between Dhaka and North Bengal for about two hours and caused massive traffic jams. In addition, students held a freshman orientation and seminar on the highway.
