The government has decided to investigate the chairmen, directors and MDs of 26 banks that were in charge during the 15 years of the ousted Awami League government. Of these, six are government-owned and 18 are private sector commercial banks. As part of the investigation, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is starting to request information about their bank accounts and assets. The government has information that irregularities and corruption have occurred in these banks at various times.

At the same time, all the governors, deputy governors and heads of the Bangladesh Bank (BFIU) who were in charge from 2009 until the fall of the Hasina government have come under investigation. Recently, the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance wrote to the ACC chairman requesting him to take necessary action against these officials. Their term of office has been considered from 2009 to August 5, 2024. The ACC has already summoned the bank accounts of three former governors of Bangladesh Bank, Dr. Atiur Rahman, Dr. Fazle Kabir and Abdur Rouf Talukder, and six deputy governors.

According to sources from the Financial Institutions Division, the list includes government banks Sonali, Rupali, Janata, Agrani, Basic and BDBL. Private banks include Islami, Social Islami, IFIC, UCB, EXIM, First Security Islami, Al-Arafah Islami, Global Islami, Union, National, NRB, NRB Global, Meghna, Bangladesh Commerce, Premier, Padma, AB and ICB Islami Bank. Most of the directors and MDs who were in charge during the Awami League government are no longer in charge.

However, sources in the Finance Ministry said that the interim government believes that major irregularities, corruption, looting and money laundering have occurred in the banking sector during the 15 years of the last Awami League government. Major loan scams have occurred in government-owned commercial banks. Irregularities and corruption have also occurred in many private sector banks. For this reason, the ACC will summon the bank accounts and assets of those who were in charge as chairmen, directors and MDs of these banks for the last 15 years, investigate and take action. Among them are six banks that were under the control of the discussed S Alam Group.

Recently, at a press conference organized to mark the one-year anniversary of the government, Financial Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said that money has been embezzled and laundered through collusion with the chairmen and directors of many banks. Due to this, the rate of defaulted loans in some banks has reached a terrifying level. He heard that the defaulted loans of a bank are 95 percent.
