The Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance has cancelled the appointment of AFM Shahinul Islam, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
The decision was announced in an office order issued on Tuesday (September 9).
Earlier, after the investigation into the video scandal and allegations of illegal transactions against him was proven, his expulsion was recommended. However, despite the passage of the stipulated time, no action was taken, which created anger among Bangladesh Bank officials and employees.
The investigation committee mentioned in its report that Shahinul Islam allowed controversial businessman Khandaker Enayet Ullah to withdraw Tk 190 million from his frozen account. In addition, evidence of unusual cash deposits was found in his own and his wife's bank accounts. The forensic examination of the objectionable video also confirmed its authenticity.
Tensions rose within Bangladesh Bank after the videos went viral on social media on August 18. He was forced to leave the office in the face of protests from officials and employees and was sent on leave while the investigation was ongoing. After a long period of tension, his appointment finally ended with the cancellation of his appointment.
In the background, it is known that after the fall of the Awami League government, AKM Ehsan took charge as the acting chief and took strict action against influential groups. However, due to invisible pressure, he was not appointed permanently. Despite not being on the search committee's list, Shahinul Islam became the BFIU chief in January this year. The appointment was questionable from the beginning.
Bangladesh Bank officials see the cancellation of the appointment as a positive decision. According to them, the delay may have tarnished the institution's image, but the final action will restore confidence in the financial sector.
According to information received from those involved in the investigation, the forensic examination of Shahinul Islam's objectionable video has been found to be authentic. In addition, the investigation committee has also found evidence of his involvement in illegally withdrawing money from the bank accounts of some influential businessmen and leaders that were seized during the reign of the ruling Hasina government.
