Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svirydenko has officially confirmed that the cabinet building in the capital Kiev was damaged in a Russian cruise missile attack early Sunday, the first time the building has been hit since Moscow launched its military campaign in the country in 2022.
Ukraine's air force said Russia fired a record number of drones and missiles in an overnight attack on Kiev on Saturday, totaling more than 800.
According to the Air Force, in the latest attacks, 9 missiles and 56 drones hit 37 locations, and the destroyed missiles and drones fell in 8 locations.
The Prime Minister said the roof and upper floors of the cabinet building were damaged. In a post on social media, she wrote, "The enemy is creating fear among the people of the country every day."
"This morning we saw a large plume of smoke rising into the sky over Independence Square, just behind the Maidan," Sviridenko wrote. "Then we heard (the sound of an explosion) and saw two Russian cruise missiles flying at very high speed. Then there was another explosion."
It is very rare for Russian missiles and drones to hit the center of Kiev right here, because the area is heavily fortified with air defenses.
But this time, it seems that Kiev is under too much pressure.
