Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that peace in Ukraine is possible through US leadership and European unity. He is currently in Saudi Arabia and is scheduled to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the US Secretary of State.
Zelensky also expressed gratitude to European countries for providing military assistance, Anadolu news agency reported on Tuesday (March 11).
The news agency said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirmed on Monday that a just and lasting peace (in Ukraine) can be achieved through US leadership and coordinated efforts across Europe.
“A strong stance on the front lines of the fight for a just and lasting peace and strong diplomacy must work together. Under American leadership and with the cooperation of all of Europe, this is absolutely achievable,” Zelensky said in a statement on Telegram.
He highlighted recent commitments by European countries to strengthen Ukraine's defenses, including new military assistance packages, improved air defense systems, and increased investment in the country's defense industry.
Zelensky expressed gratitude to Ukraine's partners and emphasized their collective role in establishing peace.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Syhiba said he had spoken by phone with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. “Before the meeting in Jeddah, I stressed that Ukraine, like no other country, wants to end the war,” he said in a post on social media platform X. “We discussed ways to bring peace and long-term security to Ukraine.”
Zelensky is currently in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, where he is scheduled to meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Talks between US and Ukrainian officials are also scheduled for Tuesday.
The United States has cut off military intelligence and satellite data sharing to Ukraine, as well as aid to the country, following President Trump's public spat with Zelensky at the White House. The Trump administration has taken the step in an attempt to force Kiev to negotiate an end to Russia's aggression. The war in Ukraine is Europe's largest conflict since World War II.
Zelensky has faced Trump's wrath after rejecting a mineral deal with Washington. The Ukrainian president said the deal should include US security guarantees. But the Trump administration has refused to make any such commitments, instead calling on Europe to increase aid to the war-torn country.
European leaders have already agreed to increase defense spending as they pledge to support Ukraine against Russian threats. Washington has also poured cold water on Ukraine's NATO ambitions.
In such a situation, Zelensky confirmed on Saturday that he would soon visit Saudi Arabia and that after meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday, Ukrainian diplomatic and military representatives would meet with the United States on Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia also hosted talks between Moscow and Washington last month.
