The Teesta River is flowing above the danger level due to continuous heavy rains and landslides in the upstream hills. At 9 am on Thursday, the water level at the Teesta Barrage point, the country's largest irrigation project, was 15 centimeters above the danger level (52.15 centimeters).
Earlier on Wednesday morning, the water level crossed the danger level and first reached 7 centimeters above, then decreased slightly to 4 centimeters. It increased to 11 centimeters above on Thursday due to overnight rainfall and upstream inundation. This has caused flooding in the vast lowlands of Nilphamari and downstream areas of Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Kurigram and Gaibandha across the Teesta. At least 20,000 people have been waterlogged in these areas. Fields of various crops including Ropa Aman have been submerged. People across the river are taking shelter in higher places fearing that the water flow will gradually increase.
Ramzan Ali, a member of Laxmitri UP in Gangachara, Rangpur, said that the water level in Teesta has been rising rapidly since morning. Families in the low-lying areas have already been waterlogged.
Laxmitri UP Chairman Abdullah Al Hadi said that if the trend of water level rise continues since morning, there is a fear that this year's flood will take a terrible turn. Families in the low-lying areas have already been asked to take shelter in higher places with caution.
The Water Development Board said heavy rains and upstream floods are likely to continue in the region for the next two days. This is likely to cause short-term flooding in Rangpur, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Kurigram.
Amitabh Chowdhury, executive engineer of the Dalia Division of the Water Development Board, said that the water level in the Teesta River has increased due to heavy rains and upstream hill erosion. 44 water gates of the barrage have been opened to keep the situation normal.
