Youths continued to protest in New Baneshwar and other parts of the Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday, defying curfew orders imposed after Monday’s protests and government suppression.
At least 17 protesters were killed in Kathmandu and two in Itahari, while over 400 protesters sustained serious injuries after the police used excessive force during the Gen Z protest on Monday.
To protest against the government suppression, demonstrations have been staged in Kalanki, Chapagaun and other places of the Valley from early morning on Tuesday.
Police arrested a few protesters in front of the Federal Parliament building.
Authorities have enforced curfews across Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts. The Kathmandu District Administration Office announced a curfew inside the Ring Road from 8:30 am until further notice, covering areas including Balkumari Bridge, Koteshwar, Sinamangal, Gaushala, Chabahil, Narayan Gopal Chowk, Gongabu, Balaju, Swayambhu, Kalanki, Balkhu and the Bagmati Bridge.
Lalitpur’s curfew applies from 9am to midnight in parts of wards 2, 4, 9, 18 and 25, including Bhaisepati, Sanepa and Chyasal. Bhaktapur also imposed restrictions from 8:30am until further notice in Madhyapur Thimi, Suryabinayak, Changunarayan and Bhaktapur municipalities.
The orders prohibit all movement, gatherings, rallies, processions, meetings and sit-ins under Section 6(3) of the Local Administration Act, 1971.
Despite the restrictions, youths spontaneously gathered near the Parliament building in New Baneshwar on Tuesday morning. They carried no banners. “Yesterday’s incident exposed the government’s failure. I came here to stand with the youths,” one participant said.
On Monday, 19 people were killed during a Gen Z protest against corruption and the social media shutdown. Leaders from both ruling and opposition parties criticised the government’s response, saying the tragedy reflected its repressive measures.
