Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned. He announced his resignation on Tuesday afternoon (September 9) after 19 people were killed during protests against the country's social media shutdown and corruption. This has sparked speculation that he may flee to Dubai or India.
This was reported by the Indian media India Today. According to the news, Prime Minister Oli may leave the country; a high alert has been issued on the border with India amid protests.
Earlier, KP Sharma Oli said in a statement that he had resigned to pave the way for a constitutional solution to the ongoing crisis.
Earlier, protests continued across Nepal, including the capital Kathmandu, since early Tuesday morning. During this time, agitated crowds attacked and vandalized the residences of several influential leaders. The residences of Oli and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba were also attacked. The offices of political parties also became targets.
Mohan Regmi, executive director of the Civil Service Hospital, told the BBC that at least two people were killed in Tuesday's protests. Another 90 people are being treated at the hospital.
Earlier, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called for an all-party meeting to resolve the crisis after tensions spread across the country following the security forces' crackdown on youth movements.
In a statement released before his resignation, Oli said the meeting would be held at 6 pm. He did not specify where the meeting would be held. He said the only way to resolve the crisis was through dialogue.
He further said, "Monday's protests and subsequent incidents across the country, including the capital, have saddened me. Any kind of violence is not in the interest of the country. A peaceful and negotiated solution is what is needed now."
