National elections may be held next year, i.e. by the end of 2025, said Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government. And if we add to this the expected level of reforms in the electoral process and in the light of the recommendations of the Electoral Reform Commission and based on national consensus, then it may take at least another six months of additional time, he noted.
The chief advisor to the interim government expressed such optimism in his address to the nation on the occasion of the great Victory Day today. BTV and BTV World are simultaneously broadcasting his speech live on Monday (December 16) at 10 am.
Addressing the nation, Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, "From now on, we can all create a tradition that first-time voters will ensure close to 100 percent voting in all elections, including local elections, and in all centers. If we can ensure this, no government in the future will dare to take away people's voting rights."
In his speech, Dr. Yunus said, "Each commission is important for us to implement our desire for reform. However, I would like to talk about the Electoral Reform and Constitutional Reform Commissions separately, because the preparations and date of our next elections mainly depend on the recommendations of these two commissions."
The chief advisor said, the big news in this regard is that the Election Commission, including the Chief Election Commissioner, has been formed. The commission has assumed responsibility. From now on, the responsibility has been entrusted to them to start the process of forming the future government. They have started their preparations. They have a lot of work to do.
He said, "First, the biggest task is to update the voter list. This is already a difficult task. Now the task has become even more difficult because voters did not have the opportunity to participate in the last three elections. No one had the opportunity to verify the voter list. We have to ensure that the names of all those who have become eligible to vote in the last 15 years are included in the voter list. This is a big task."
There is no room for complacency after the student uprising. After a long time, many young people will vote for the first time in their lives. They were deprived of that right and joy in the past. Therefore, their voting in this election will be a memorable event. All arrangements must be made to make this experience smooth.
Addressing the major political parties, the Chief Adviser said, "I have repeatedly appealed to you to complete all the major reforms and hold the elections. However, if, and I say "if", due to political consensus, we have to complete the elections on the basis of accurate preparation of the voter list with a few reforms, then it may be possible to hold the elections by the end of 2025. And if we add to this the expected level of reforms in the electoral process and in the light of the recommendations of the Electoral Reforms Commission and based on the national consensus, then it may take at least another six months of additional time."
