The dress code for Bangladesh Bank officers and employees has been withdrawn on the instructions of the Governor, following discussions and criticism.
This information was given in a text message from Bangladesh Bank on Thursday.
Considering the social context, a consultative discussion on employee attire was held in various departmental meetings. It was recommended that women employees wear modest clothing, such as a salwar-kameez or saree with a scarf, and men wear formal attire. It was also said that clothing that is overly elaborate, tight, or inconsistent with the office environment should be discouraged.
However, when the news was published in the press yesterday, there was mixed reaction on social media. Many commented that such a directive amounted to interference in personal freedom.
Amidst the discussion on social media about the circular issued yesterday, the central bank issued another statement on the matter. The spokesperson's office said that it was an advisory circular . There is no obligation or direction imposed on female colleagues to wear burqa and hijab.
When the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, who was stationed abroad, saw this situation, he expressed his anger over the matter. On his direct orders, the circular was immediately withdrawn.
Bangladesh Bank has stated that any future initiatives will be taken in a more measured and sensitive manner to maintain harmony and professionalism within the office environment. At the same time, it has been ensured that such discussions will not curtail the freedom of employees to dress.
