India's Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah, two days after Delhi summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma in Dhaka on Sunday.
The summons came at a time when Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah had made a scathing remark about India, warning that the 'Seven Sisters' region could be isolated if Bangladesh becomes unstable, the Times of India reported, citing news agency ANI.
sources said that it was not clear why the Bangladesh High Commissioner was summoned. However, sources believe that Delhi is unhappy with Hasnat Abdullah's comments.
Last Sunday, Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry said in a press release that it summoned the Indian High Commissioner and sought cooperation to prevent the suspects in the assassination attempt on Inquilab Manch convener Sharif Osman Hadi from escaping to India. It also demanded that they be arrested and deported promptly if they enter India.
The ministry's statement said that Sheikh Hasina is inciting her supporters to disrupt the upcoming parliamentary elections. Bangladesh expressed concern that India has given her such an opportunity. It also called for the prompt extradition of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan for the sake of justice.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a press release on the same day, saying that Delhi rejected the allegations of anti-Bangladesh activities using Indian soil.
