A three-day state mourning has been declared from Wednesday to Friday (December 31 and January 1 and 2) following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. In addition, Wednesday (December 31) will be a general holiday across the country.
The chief advisor made the announcement in an address to the nation on Tuesday afternoon.
Professor Muhammad Yunus said, "I have declared three days of state mourning on the death of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and a one-day general holiday on the day of her funeral prayer tomorrow. I humbly appeal to everyone to maintain discipline in all forms of mourning, including the funeral prayer."
He said, Begum Khaleda Zia was an absolutely glorious figure in Bangladeshi politics. Her outstanding role in the struggle to establish democracy, multi-party political culture and people's rights will remain indelible in history. Her uncompromising leadership against dictatorship and fascism has repeatedly shown the nation the way out of undemocratic situations and provided the inspiration for liberation.
Stating that the nation will forever remember her brilliant contribution to the country and the nation with respect, he said, "Her long political journey, people-oriented leadership, and her steadfast role in upholding the independence and sovereignty of the beloved motherland will remain unforgettable. The void of such a great, far-sighted, and pure patriotic leader will never be filled."
He further said, "In this moment of grief, my sincere appeal to you is that let us all, from our respective positions, seek forgiveness from the Almighty God for the departed soul of Begum Khaleda Zia. At the same time, let us remain united in this difficult time for the nation. I urge everyone to be vigilant so that no one can attempt instability or sabotage during this time of grief. It is very important for all of us to play our responsible role at this time."
The Chief Advisor said, "I know that you are all very emotional at this time. I hope that you will show patience in this time of mourning and cooperate with all those involved in carrying out all the formalities, including his funeral."
