Sayan F Rahman, son of former adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Salman F Rahman, has come into the limelight amid various reports of corruption involving Tulip Siddique, the daughter of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's sister and City Minister of the United Kingdom.
He is the chairman of the advisory council of a charity formed by King Charles III of the United Kingdom. He donated £250,000 to the charity.
According to media reports, amid the growing controversy surrounding Tulip Siddique's corruption, the spotlight has now shifted to the head of the UK-based charity established under the patronage of British King Charles III.
Ahmed Sayan Fazlur Rahman, son of Sheikh Hasina's adviser and businessman Salman F Rahman, and their family members are currently under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the financial intelligence unit of the central bank, froze the bank accounts of Salman, Sayan and daughter-in-law Shahzareh Rahman in August last year.
The UK's best-selling newspaper, The Mail on Sunday (MOS), said on Saturday that Tulip Siddique's bank accounts in Bangladesh had been frozen as "a family friend" — who is the chairman of a charity founded by the British monarch.
Cyan's relationship with Tulip's family has been there for decades. It also said that whenever Tulip's aunt and Awami League chief Hasina goes to London, she stays in Cyan's £13 million house without paying any rent.
Tulip's mother Sheikh Rehana lives in this house in Golders Green of the UK without any kind of rent and the owner of this house is an offshore company controlled by Sayan F Rahman.
According to the newspaper The Mail on Sunday (MOS), the Bangladeshi billionaire is serving as the chairman of the advisory council of 'British Asian Trust'. The charity was founded in 2007 by the then British Prince Charles III to work for poverty alleviation.
Cyan was once the chief executive officer or CEO of his family-controlled Beximco Group. And it is still on display on the charity's website. King Charles once praised Cyan's contribution at a dinner at Buckingham Palace.
"We're as good as the people who work with us," he said. So I am pleased that our new program in Bangladesh will be supervised and supported by Sayan Rahman, Head of our Bangladesh Advisory Council. ”
According to the UK-based media The Sunday Times, the organization started its activities in Bangladesh in 2018. That year, Charles praised Sayan Rahman in front of everyone at a dinner at Buckingham Palace in London.
The Mail on Sunday said Cyan had retained his position at the trust despite the corruption allegations. In a statement, the British Asian Trust said: "We are aware of the allegations against Cyan F Rahman and continue to monitor ongoing developments in Bangladesh." ”
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Cyan was quoted by The Mail on Sunday as saying: "Sayan Rahman is a British born, a British citizen and a successful international businessman. Neither he nor his wife have been charged with any crime. Only their Bangladeshi bank accounts of more than 300 people with links to the former prime minister have been frozen. This is a completely politically motivated move. ”
Cyan has donated £250,000 to the British Asian Trust. In a recent interview with The Sunday Times to discuss money laundering in Bangladesh, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus also highlighted the issue of Cyan's donation.
Speaking in this context, he made a sarcastic comment about Cyan's "generosity."
Shayan was once the vice-chairman of International Finance Investment and Commerce Bank or IFIC Bank. When the bank's board was reconstituted after the change of power, he lost the post of director.
