The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for individual taxpayers by one month. Through a special order issued today, the deadline was extended to December 31. The deadline was scheduled to end on November 30.
At the same time, the NBR issued another order today that if a taxpayer is unable to submit their income tax return online due to problems with registration in the e-return system, they can apply to the concerned Excise Commissioner with specific justification by December 15.
NBR says that this year, online filing of income tax returns has been made mandatory for all categories of taxpayers, except senior taxpayers aged 65 (sixty-five) years or above, physically disabled or special needs taxpayers, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives filing returns on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh. Although several categories of taxpayers have been exempted from the obligation to file returns online in the 2025-26 tax year, they can file e-returns online if they wish.
On behalf of the taxpayer, his authorized representative can also file e-return online this year. In addition, although there is no obligation for Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad to file returns online, if they apply by sending their passport number, national identity card number, e-mail address, etc. to ereturn@etaxnbr. gov. bd, an OTP and registration link are being sent to the applicant's e-mail. Through this, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad can also easily file income tax returns online by registering in the e-return system.
Taxpayers can easily and hassle-free pay their income tax online from home by registering their actual income, expenses, assets and liabilities in the e-return system without uploading any papers or documents. Income tax can be paid through debit card, credit card, internet banking or mobile financial services (Bikash, Nagad etc.). After filing the e-return, the e-return filing slip and the required information can be printed automatically.
So far this year, more than 1.8 million taxpayers have filed e-returns online.
