Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was convicted of taking money from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been remanded in custody. He appeared in court on Tuesday (October 21) and was then taken into custody.
Nicholas served as president from 2007 to 2012.
Nicolas Sarkozy's party is said to have taken millions of euros from Gaddafi for its election campaign. Earlier this month, a court sentenced him to five years in prison and ordered him to report to prison within a month for accepting money from foreigners.
Nicolas Sarkozy has denied the charges against him. Before going to jail, he posted on social media claiming his innocence.
The former president is being held in La Saté prison. He is being held in a solitary cell. Nicolas has been kept in a separate cell for security reasons, as the prison is home to many high-profile inmates.
The BBC reported that the 95-square-foot cell will have a separate toilet, bathroom, table and small TV for Nicholas.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Sarkozy met with current President Emmanuel Macron at the Presidential Palace last week.
