Engineering students clashed with police on their way from Shahbagh to Jamuna, the residence of the chief advisor, in support of the three-point demand. When the students tried to break the police barricade and move forward, the police dispersed them. At that time, the police fired several rounds of tear gas and sound grenades.
The incident took place in front of the Hotel Intercontinental at around 1:45 pm on Wednesday (August 27). The students then left the area.
Earlier, engineering students from various private universities including BUET blocked Shahbagh in the capital for the second day, demanding three points. The Shahbagh area became abuzz with the students' slogans.
Their slogans include, 'Apocalypse or struggle, struggle, struggle', 'Quota not by merit, merit by merit', 'One statement in the mouth of everyone, diploma technician', 'We want an end to illegal diploma quota', 'Stop injustice in the name of quota', 'Break the quota system, restore the rights of meritorious people'.
The three-point demands of the engineering students are - not to allow the word "engineer" to be written before the names of diploma engineers, not to promote any diploma engineers to the ninth grade, and to give graduate engineers the opportunity to enter the tenth grade jobs.
