A court has sent Jalal Ahmed, an independent VP candidate in the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) elections, to jail in a murder attempt case.
The court issued this order on Wednesday (August 27) afternoon.
Earlier, the Dhaka University administration filed a case of attempted murder against Jalal Ahmed, an independent VP candidate in the DUCSU elections, at Shahbagh Police Station for allegedly stabbing his roommate. Later, Jalal Ahmed was arrested and sent to court in the case.
DUCSU VP candidate Jalal Ahmed stabbed a student named Rabiul Haque in room 462 of Dhaka University's Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall at around 12:30 am on Tuesday (August 26). Jalal is a student of the University's Television and Film Department. The injured Rabiul Haque is a student of the Political Science Department.
After the incident, the university administration handed over Jalal Ahmed to the police.
Witnesses said that Jalal Ahmed stabbed his roommate Rabiul with a knife over a long-standing argument. The injured Rabiul is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Rabiul Haque, who is undergoing treatment, said, "At around 12:30 am, Jalal came into the room, turned on the lights and started making noise. This woke me up. Then I said, I have to go to the library in the morning, don't make unnecessary noise, I am having trouble sleeping." He got angry and called me an illegal and an outsider. When I protested, he started hitting me. I somehow defended myself.
Around 1 am, the hall principal Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam said that he (Jalal) is being expelled from the hall for such brutal acts. Arrangements will also be made to cancel his studentship.
Stating that the incident will not have any impact on the upcoming DUCSU elections, university proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said, "There were several complaints against Jalal Ahmed before. I cannot say at this moment what action the previous administration has taken against him. However, after today's incident, all the issues will be investigated."
In this incident, many students have demanded the resignation of the provost of Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall. In this regard, the proctor said, "I myself have seen that the students are demanding the resignation of the hall administration, especially the provost. It would be better if they sit with the vice-chancellor at some point on Wednesday and present their demands in a systematic manner. Then action will be taken regarding their demands."
