Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) held a torchlight procession to protest against the police attack on engineering students who were protesting for their three-point demands. They took out the procession at around 8 pm on Friday.
On Wednesday around 1:30 pm, as part of the 'Long March to Dhaka' program, students from various engineering universities including BUET marched towards Jamuna after blocking Shahbagh in the capital. At that time, when they came to the Hotel Intercontinental intersection from Shahbagh, the police stopped them. At that time, the students also started throwing bricks and stones at the law enforcement agencies. The police used water cannons and threw 8-10 sound grenades and tear gas to disperse the students.
The three demands of the engineering students include - not allowing the word 'engineer' to be written before the names of diploma engineers, no diploma engineers should be promoted to grade 9, and graduate engineers should be given the opportunity to enter grade 10 jobs.
