Authorities have announced the suspension of all university exams following clashes between Chittagong University (CU) students and local residents.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin confirmed the matter to the media on Sunday (August 31) morning.
He told the media that considering the safety of students and the overall situation, it has been decided to postpone all the exams on Sunday. A decision regarding the exams will be announced later, taking into account the situation.
Earlier, at around 1:30 am yesterday, local residents clashed with students over the beating of a female student by a janitor at the university. Both sides exchanged blows and threw bricks. At least 50 students were injured. About 20 students have been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Some of them have injuries from country-made weapons.
Regarding the overall affairs of the university, Proctor Professor Dr. Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif told Dhaka Post, "The students who were trapped in different flats in yesterday's incident and those who were able to contact us have been rescued. We are now holding a VC meeting on this issue. The chairman-member of the area has been called. DGFI NSI has been informed. The next decision on this issue will be taken after consulting everyone."
Incidentally, a female student of the university's philosophy department for the 2024-25 academic year lives in Shahabuddin's house near the fish market at Gate No. 2. When she tried to enter the house around 11:30 pm, she got into an argument with the doorman. At one point, the doorman beat the student. Later, the student informed one of her male friends on her mobile phone about the matter.
When some students got the news and went to arrest the doorman, the heat spread in the area. At that time, the students and the locals got into a clash. At one stage, the locals gathered and attacked the students by announcing on the mosque's microphone. On the other hand, the students also gathered and announced on the mosque's microphone at Suhrawardy Hall of CU and got into a clash. More than fifty students were injured in this.
