US President Donald Trump has nominated career diplomat Brent T. Christensen to be the next US ambassador to Bangladesh.
The White House sent the nomination to the US Senate for a hearing on Tuesday (September 2), the US State Department said.
Christensen has extensive diplomatic and administrative experience. On January 20, 2025, President Trump nominated him to be the senior official assigned to the post of Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs.
From August 2022 to January 2025, he served as the Foreign Policy Advisor to the US Strategic Command. During this time, he advised the commander on the foreign policy implications of the USS TRATCOM global strategic deterrence mission.
As a senior Foreign Service officer, Christensen served as the Political and Economic Counselor at the US Embassy in Dhaka from 2019 to 2021. He also served as Deputy Director of the Office of Regional Security and Arms Transfers in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and as a Person Fellow on the Majority Staff of the Asia and Pacific Subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
He has also served as Special Assistant to the Special Representative (North Korea Policy), Cyber Coordinator in the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs, Deputy Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Manila, Deputy Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in San Salvador, Bangladesh Country Officer in the State Department's Office of Pakistan and Bangladesh Affairs, Economic Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh, and Vice Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.
In addition to his State Department duties, Christensen served as a career Foreign Service member of the Foreign Service Impasse Disputes Panel under the U.S. Federal Labor Relations Authority from 2018 to 2021. He graduated with distinction from the National War College and received a Master of Science degree in National Security Strategy in 2022.
He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Statistics from Texas A&M University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Managerial Studies from Rice University.
Christensen is fluent in Spanish, German, and Vietnamese, and has learned French, Japanese, and Portuguese. Before joining the Foreign Service in 2002, he worked as a management consultant in Houston and New York City.
