The Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that the government has brought amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Act. As a result of this amendment, those who are accused in anti-humanity cases will not be able to participate in any further elections.
The amendments to the ICT Act were brought in a meeting held at the Chief Advisor's office in Tejgaon in the capital on Thursday (September 4) under the chairmanship of Professor Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government.
The Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam gave this information at a press conference organized at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital this afternoon.
Shafiqul Alam also said that a new Section 20 (C) has been added to the International Crimes Tribunal Act 1973 through the ordinance. According to the newly added section, if a formal charge sheet is filed against a person under Section 9 (1) of the said Act, he will be ineligible to be elected or remain a member of parliament. Similarly, he shall be ineligible to be elected or to hold office as a member, commissioner, chairman, mayor or administrator of a local government council or institution.
He shall also be ineligible to be appointed to the service of the Republic or to hold any other public office.
