A young man named Abul Kalam was killed when a bearing pad of the metro rail fell off in the capital's Farmgate area. Metro rail services were suspended for about two and a half hours after the incident. Later, train services on the Uttara-Agargaon-Uttara route resumed at 2:58 pm for the convenience of passengers. At the same time, a source responsible for MRT Line-6 said that work is being done to run trains on the Agargaon-Motijheel-Agargaon section.
The accident occurred at around 12:30 pm on Sunday (October 26). The young man, Abul Kalam, died on the spot after being hit by the bearing pad. It is known that his home is in Isharpati village of Naria upazila of Shariatpur.
In this regard, Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mobarak Hossain said that a pedestrian was walking on the footpath in front of the Krishibid Institute under the Farmgate metro station. At that time, the bearing pad fell on his head from above and he died on the spot.
Sub-Inspector (SI) of Tejgaon Police Station Nazrul Islam said, we have informed the station authorities about the falling bearing pad.
He said that the legal process is underway after recovering the body.
Eyewitnesses said that one person died and a tea shop on the sidewalk was also damaged due to the falling bearing.
Meanwhile, Road and Rail Advisor Fawzul Kabir Khan, who visited the accident site at noon, said that the family of the person who was killed when the bearing pad of the Metrorail was removed will be given an initial compensation of Tk 5 lakh. In addition, if there is a working person in his family, he will be provided with a job in the Metrorail.
He also said that a 5-member investigation committee has been formed into the accident with Bridges Division Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf as the convener. The committee will submit the investigation report within the next two weeks.
Earlier, on September 18, one of the four springs of the Metrorail viaduct moved in a part of Dhaka's Farmgate and Bijoy Sarani.
Note that a bearing pad is a heavy object made of a special type of rubber, which is placed at the junction of the pier and the viaduct.
