According to data from Switzerland-based air quality monitoring organization IQAir, the air quality in the capital Dhaka remains in 'unhealthy' condition this (Monday) morning.
According to IQAir's data at 9 am, Dhaka's average air quality index was recorded at 161. According to this score, Dhaka is ranked fourth in the list of cities with the most polluted air in the world. Air quality between 151 and 200 is classified as 'unhealthy', which is harmful to everyone and poses a serious health risk, especially for vulnerable groups (children, the elderly and the sick).
One of the main causes of pollution is the presence of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) floating in the air. According to IQAir, the concentration of PM2.5 in Dhaka's air is 14 times higher than the daily guideline value set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The air quality in Khulna was worse than in the capital Dhaka today, with an air quality index of 192. In addition, the air quality index in Kapasia, Gazipur, was 232.
The current 'unhealthy' air quality poses a health risk to everyone, especially vulnerable groups. IQAir recommends taking the following steps in this situation:
1. Use a mask: Always wear a mask when going outside. 2. Keep windows closed: Keep windows closed to prevent polluted air from entering the house. 3. Avoid exercising outdoors: Avoid exercising outdoors as much as possible. 4. Use an air purifier: Use an air purifier indoors if possible.
Dust from construction work, vehicle exhaust, and industrial emissions are the main causes of air pollution in Dhaka. This pollution has increased with the onset of dry winter weather.
