Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz has issued strict instructions to prevent public killings and gunfire in the port city of Chittagong.
In a wireless message to all police officers today (Tuesday), he ordered them to 'brush fire' using submachine guns (SMGs) on sight at armed and armed terrorists. However, he confirmed that the order would not apply to any unarmed person.
Multiple sources from the CMP confirmed that on Tuesday afternoon, the commissioner repeatedly instructed the patrol and police through the wireless set - 'No shotguns, no Chinese rifles, now the SMG will be in brushfire mode.'
At the same time, he ordered the police to carry shisha shotguns, two gas guns and a 9mm pistol during patrols and operations. In addition, the commissioner ordered the permanent checkposts to be increased from seven to 13.
Police officials said that on November 5, listed terrorist Sarwar Hossain Babla was killed in a shootout with terrorists at a public rally of BNP candidate Ershad Ullah in Khandkarpara area of Chalitalli under Bayezid Bostami Police Station in the city. Ershad Ullah was also injured in the same incident. The next day, a disabled rickshaw puller was injured in a shootout in the same area. In view of this, the CMP Commissioner gave this new instruction.
In this regard, CMP Commissioner Hasib Aziz said, "Brushfire on sight will be done only for armed terrorists. It will not be applied to unarmed people. It will not even be applied to those who hold a quick procession of the Awami League. We will arrest them and hand them over to the court."
He further said, "Our goal is to discourage terrorists from entering the city. There have been incidents of open killings in our area. This measure has been taken so that the terrorists involved in these incidents do not get any more courage. Our goal is to control specific terrorists. According to sections 96 to 106 of the Penal Code, police members always have the right to self-defense. If necessary, I will bear all the responsibility."
