The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered the confiscation of all properties in the country belonging to ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, who were sentenced to death in a crime against humanity case, and their ownership in the country. The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, issued the order on Monday.
The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death in a case of crimes against humanity committed during the July-August uprising last year. The three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, announced the verdict on Monday afternoon. The other two members of the tribunal are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Earlier, the proceedings began at around 12:30 pm on Monday. The 453-page verdict has six parts. In addition to lawyers, family members of some of the victims who died in July and August were present in the court when the verdict was announced.
In its verdict, the tribunal said that the guilt of three accused, including Sheikh Hasina, has been proven. Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death on two charges. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has been sentenced to death on one charge.
The verdict said, "We are of the unanimous opinion that justice will not be ensured unless they are given the maximum punishment for the heinous crime of indiscriminate and brutal killing of people during the July Uprising."
The accused in the case, Sheikh Hasina and her government's former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, are staying in India. The other arrested accused, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, was sentenced to five years in prison after confessing his guilt and turning himself in as a public witness. Mamun was the only accused present at the tribunal today.
This is the first time a trial has been held since the political landscape changed on August 5 last year. On July 10, the first formal trial began in the July-August crimes against humanity case, with five specific charges including superior command responsibility. On July 2, the same tribunal sentenced Sheikh Hasina to six months in prison for contempt of court.
