The High Court has postponed the Central Student Union (SHAKSU) and Hall Parliament elections of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet. Voting for the SHAKSU elections was scheduled to be held tomorrow, January 20.
The High Court bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md. Asif Hasan issued this order on Monday (January 19).
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, Barrister Rashna Imam, Barrister Moniruzzaman Asad heard the writ petition in the court. Advocate Mohammad Hossain Lipu heard the petition on behalf of the university. Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque appeared on behalf of the state.
Later, Barrister Rashna Imam told Dhaka Post that the High Court has suspended the approval given by the Election Commission for the Shaksu elections for four weeks. As a result, the Shaksu elections will not be held tomorrow. The Shaksu elections can be held any day after four weeks.
Earlier yesterday, a writ petition was filed in the High Court seeking a postponement of the Shaksu and Hall parliamentary elections.
Three students, including independent candidate Mominur Rashid Shuvo, filed the writ petition in the relevant branch of the High Court in the Shaksu elections. Sources confirmed the matter to Dhaka Post.
The Chief Election Commissioner and other concerned parties have been made respondents in the writ petition.
The writ petition states that the Election Commission has issued instructions to suspend all types of elections before the National Assembly elections. In this situation, allowing the Shaksu elections to be held is not legal.
