The National Pay Commission is going to submit a report doubling the basic salary in the new salary structure of government employees. If their recommendation is correct, the minimum basic salary will be 20 thousand taka. And the maximum basic salary has been set at 1 lakh 60 thousand taka. There are 20 steps left until the end.

Apart from this, other allowances and facilities will be applicable as at present. As a result, the salary of a worker in the lowest, i.e. 20th grade, in Dhaka will be around 42 thousand taka.

It is learned that the recommendation is to increase the Baisakhi allowance for government officials and employees from 20 percent to 50 percent. Until now, there was a travel allowance for employees in the 11th to 20th steps. The new pay commission is recommending that this travel allowance be given from the 10th to 20th steps.

Along with working government officials and employees, the pension rates of pensioners are also increasing significantly. Pensioners who receive less than 20 thousand rupees per month are getting a 100 percent increase in pension. Those who receive a pension of 20 to 40 thousand rupees per month are getting a 75 percent increase. And those who receive a pension of more than 40 thousand rupees per month are getting a 55 percent increase.

Pay Commission chief and former finance secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan told, "We will hand over the report to the chief advisor today. All I can say is that something very good is happening. We are making very good proposals."

The interim government formed a pay commission on July 24 to formulate a new salary structure for government employees. The pay commission, headed by Zakir Ahmed Khan, was asked to submit a report within six months.

The Pay Commission is preparing to submit its report on Wednesday after several extensions, although there are doubts whether the current government will be able to complete the work.

Currently, there are 20 salary grades for government employees according to the 2015 pay scale. About 1.5 million government officials and employees in the country receive salaries and allowances according to this pay scale.

In this structure, the lowest, that is, 20th grade, has a basic salary of 8,250 taka per month. A 9th grade employee who has joined the first class officer position by passing the BCS exam gets a basic salary of 22,000 taka per month.

At the highest level, a secretary receives 78,000 taka per month, a senior secretary 82,000 taka, and a cabinet secretary and a principal secretary to the prime minister 86,000 taka as basic salary.

Government employees receive separate allowances for house rent, medical and travel expenses, and other benefits in addition to their basic salary.

In addition to two festival allowances a year, they receive an additional allowance of 20 percent of their basic salary on Bengali New Year.
