ACC says that his wife also has assets worth crores of taka. This huge wealth was made with bribe money.

He is Md. Rashedul Alam, a senior engineer at the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). His wife Aparna Rani Das is a college teacher. A case has been recommended against the couple.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has investigated the unusual transactions in the bank accounts of Rashedul and Aparna based on a report from the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the financial intelligence unit of the central bank. The investigation found information on unusual transactions worth Tk 228 million, including the purchase of plots and flats, and investment in the stock market. After the investigation, ACC Assistant Commissioner Md. Sajid-ur-Roman recommended a case against the couple.

A source related to the ACC said that Engineer Rashedul became the owner of huge wealth between 2018 and 2024. He went abroad to study on leave in May last year. He is now in New Zealand with his family.

The ACC report said that information was found on three bank accounts and three FDR accounts in Rashedul's name. Apart from these, his salary money was deposited in Sonali Bank's account. He used the remaining bank accounts to transact bribe money.

According to the report, Rashedul has a BO (beneficial owner) account in the name of Sheltech Brokerage Limited. Through this BO account, shares worth Tk 39.961 crore of various companies were purchased from a private bank account in Rashedul's name from 2018 to 2024.

ACC investigation sources say that during the investigation, all the money in the bank accounts of Rashedul and Aparna was blocked and a plot in a residential area and a piece of land in Rashedul's home area of ​​Homna, Comilla were seized.

Stating that a report has been submitted after the investigation against Rashedul and his wife, ACC Director General (Prevention) Akhter Hossain said further action will be taken according to the law.

A watch worth 1.5 lakh taka
Rashedul's last workplace was Kishoreganj LGED. The ACC report said that he lived a luxurious life. He wore a watch worth 150,000 taka. He regularly visited five-star hotels. The investigation found information about paying bills worth millions of taka at these hotels. Information was found about buying four expensive watches from an elite shopping mall in Dhaka in 2018.

According to the ACC report, Rashedul received a salary of Tk 32,35,619 from the fiscal year 2016-17 to 2023-24. He showed savings of Tk 8 lakh. In addition, he received tax-free income of Tk 1,426,061, a gift of Tk 4 lakh from his mother, land of Tk 6 lakh from his father and grandmother, and a gift of Tk 4.5 lakh from close relatives. In addition, Rashedul showed income of Tk 3,27,138 from GPF (General Provident Fund of Government Employees) interest and other income and Tk 4,63,000 from remittances.

Assets worth crores in wife's name
Rashedul's wife Aparna is a teacher at Gurudayal Government College in Kishoreganj. ACC sources say that Aparna has assets worth Tk 91 lakh 91 thousand 842 in her name. Of this, Tk 60 lakh 43 thousand 908 is in a private bank (Kishoreganj branch). She has Tk 31 lakh 47 thousand in cash. Apart from this, she has 10 bhoris of gold ornaments.

According to the ACC report, Aparna joined the service after passing the BCS (Education Cadre) in 2017. From the beginning of her service career until 2021, she has saved 10 lakh 75 thousand 256 taka. She received 16 lakh 10 thousand 810 taka as salary and allowance. She showed 6 lakh 73 thousand 868 taka as tax-free income in her income tax documents.

During the investigation, the ACC found Aparna's legal income of 33 lakh 59 thousand 934 taka. Apart from this, all the assets in her name are illegal.

Accountability is needed for everyone involved.
In its investigation, the ACC found no legitimate and acceptable source of Rashedul Alam's vast wealth. Rashedul was contacted on Facebook Messenger to seek his statement on the matter. However, he did not respond. Later, a message was sent on Messenger but no response was received.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman told that the huge amount of money Rashedul has acquired is not legally possible. He has made this huge wealth through corruption.

Stating that corruption has become a normal occurrence in the last 15 years, Iftekharuzzaman further said, "Contractors, political party leaders and many from his organization are involved in this corruption. The ACC must conduct a detailed investigation into this matter. All those involved must be brought to account."
