Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal has been arrested.
He was arrested from the capital's Moghbazar area on Wednesday (June 25), said DMP Joint Police Commissioner (Admin and Detective-South) Mohammad Nasirul Islam.
He said a team of DB police arrested him this afternoon after conducting a raid in the capital's Moghbazar area.
BNP filed a case on June 22, accusing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former Chief Election Commissioners of irregularities and rigging in the three national elections held during the Awami League era. BNP National Executive Committee member Md. Salah Uddin Khan filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station as the plaintiff (case number-11). Kazi Habibul Awal is also named among the 24 accused in the case.
Former CEC Nurul Huda, an accused in the same case, was arrested by the police from Uttara in the capital on June 22. When the court was summoned the next day, the court ordered him to be sent on remand.
