Heavy rains in Feni and upstream water from India have caused erosion at 14 places in the flood control dams of the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers. This has flooded the low-lying areas of the bordering Fulgazi and Parashuram upazilas, causing suffering to thousands of people. Various roads are submerged in water, disrupting traffic.
However, as the rains subsided on Wednesday (July 9, 2025), the waterlogging in the city also started to subside, bringing some relief to the city's residents.
According to the Parashuram and Fulgazi Upazila administration sources, two places in Jangalghona, three in Alka, one in Shaldhar area, and one place in Uttar Sreepur area of Fulgazi Upazila of Muhuri River have been breached in the flood control dam of Parashuram Upazila. One place in Gadanagar area of Parashuram and two places in Derpara area of Fulgazi on the Silonia River have been breached. In addition, two places in Satkuchia, one in Berabaria and one place in Daulatpur area of Fulgazi Upazila of Kahua River have been breached in the flood control dam of Parashuram Upazila. Thousands of families have been left stranded due to this. The breach occurred in these places since Tuesday (July 8) afternoon.
Masudur Rahman, a resident of Nilakshmi area of Fulgazi, said, "The rain has subsided somewhat. However, water is still entering through the erosion areas. As time goes by, new areas are being flooded. Like last year's floods, this time too, we are suffering from mobile network problems. The authorities have not been able to take any action based on that experience."
Arif Hossain, a resident of Tulatali area of Parashuram, said, "The water has started rising since yesterday evening. Now there is water everywhere. Various roads have been submerged in water and traffic has been stopped. Many people are suffering due to waterlogging. No dry food or aid has arrived for the flood victims. The rain is still continuing."
Tofail Niloy, a resident of the city's Academy area, said, "Some roads were waist-deep in water yesterday. As the rains subsided, the water level has gone down a lot. However, the water is going down slowly because the drainage system is not functioning. If the municipality and district administration do not free the canals and adopt a long-term plan for the drainage system, then we will have to suffer even with a little rain."
Parshuram Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Arifur Rahman told, "There has been no new breach in the dam since last night. Water is entering the locality and flooding the low-lying areas. We are working with the affected people."
Feni Meteorological Office Officer-in-Charge Md. Mojibur Rahman said, the district has been receiving moderate to heavy rainfall for three consecutive days. The highest rainfall recorded in 24 hours till 9 am on Wednesday (July 9) was 306 mm. The rainfall has decreased compared to yesterday. Light to moderate rainfall is likely to continue across the district tomorrow as well.
Feni Water Development Board Executive Engineer Akter Hossain Majumder said, "We have received information about erosion at 11 places till morning. We are investigating the matter. The river water is still flowing 95 centimeters above the danger level. However, the water has decreased slightly since midnight. If the rain stops upstream, the risk of dam erosion will decrease."
