Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has fallen ill on stage while delivering a speech at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. The incident occurred at 5:26 pm today, Saturday, while delivering a speech at Suhrawardy Udyan.
Earlier, around 5 pm, the Jamaat Ameer got up on stage to give a speech. He fell on the stage and stood up after 45 seconds. He said, nothing happened. After 1 minute, he fell again. After a while, he stood up again.
Later, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman continued to give his speech sitting on the carpet instead of standing on the stage. When the doctors refused to give him a speech, he asked why he was talking so much.
The main part of the national rally of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami began at around 2 pm on Saturday at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on seven-point demands. Jamaat Secretary General Golam Parwar is leading the rally, which began with the recitation of the Quran.
Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman arrived at the rally venue at 12:15 pm. When Dr. Shafiqur Rahman entered Suhrawardy Udyan, leaders and activists who had taken positions on both sides of the road welcomed him with slogans. At this time, the Jamaat Ameer waved his hand and greeted him. Top leaders of the party were also present at the rally along with the Ameer.
After holding programs across the country, Jamaat is holding a rally in Dhaka demanding an electoral level playing field, fundamental reforms, the trial of the July massacre, the rehabilitation of the families of the martyrs and those injured in the coup, the implementation of the July Declaration and Charter, elections under the proportional representation (PR) system, and voting rights for expatriates.
Earlier, the first phase of the rally began at 9:40 am with a cultural program. The program was hosted by Saifullah Mansur. The cultural performance was conducted by the Saimum Shilpi Gosthi.
Jamaat, which got the opportunity to return to open politics after Sheikh Hasina fled on August 5 in the student-public uprising, has held worker rallies in all districts in the past 11 months. The names of the party candidates have been announced from these programs, which have turned into election rallies.
The Jamaat's national rally held at Suhrawardy Udyan drew a large crowd. Jamaat leaders and activists from all over the country started arriving at the rally venue from yesterday evening. Thousands of leaders and activists arrived at the park in a procession this morning.
Suhrawardy Udyan was filled to the brim by around 10 am. Due to lack of space, leaders and activists started taking positions in the areas surrounding the park.
Jamaat leaders and activists continued to take positions in Shahbagh, Dhaka University, Doel Chattar, High Court, Matsabhaban, Kakrail, Bangla Motor, Science Lab and surrounding areas.
Although the rally stage was set up at Suhrawardy Udyan, Jamaat prepared to gather leaders and activists by covering the roads around it, including Dainik Bangla, Kakrail, Gulistan, Bijoynagar, and Shahbagh. Microphones were installed.
Jamaat leaders said they will send a message to the government and BNP that there will be no elections without reforms. They will warn of boycotting the elections if the upper house of parliament is not formed through the PR system and the power of the Prime Minister is not reduced.
According to Jamaat sources, the demand for holding the entire election through PR method has been raised to convince BNP to form the upper house based on the proportion of votes. In addition to the Islamic Movement, Jamaat has invited political parties that agree on PR in the upper house to the rally.
For the first time since independence, Jamaat-e-Islami is holding a national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan alone. The party is holding its first rally at Suhrawardy Udyan since 2009.
