National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has warned that no new godfather will be allowed to emerge in Bangladesh. He said that during the previous government's tenure, Cox's Bazar had become a sanctuary for terrorists. It had become a sanctuary for drugs. Just as there were godfathers in Narayanganj, there were godfathers in Cox's Bazar as well. Sheikh Hasina was a godfather and under her, there were small godfathers all over Bangladesh. We have put an end to that godfather system. We will not allow any new godfather to emerge again.
He made these remarks at a rally at Shaheed Daulat Maidan in the Public Library premises after the July March in Cox's Bazar town on Saturday around 2 pm.
Regarding tourism in Cox's Bazar, Nahid Islam said, "The tyrannical Awami League has looted and evicted Cox's Bazar in the name of the tourism industry. We want to build an environmentally friendly tourism industry where the rights and privileges of the people of Cox's Bazar will be ensured."
Referring to the Rohingya issue as a problem in Bangladesh, he said, "We have sympathy for the Rohingya people. They have been left without rights and statelessness. But the solution is not that Bangladesh will take responsibility for them year after year. While taking responsibility for the Rohingya, we must also be aware that we are doing injustice to the people of Cox's Bazar. Taking these considerations into account, so that the security and law and order of the people of Cox's Bazar are not disrupted, very quick measures must be taken for the return of the Rohingyas."
He said, "We will appeal to the interim government, to Dr. Yunus, and to the entire world conscience, to resolve the Rohingya issue quickly. Make arrangements for the Rohingya to reach their country with dignity and rights."
Earlier, the march started from the Cox's Bazar Central Bus Terminal at 1 pm on Saturday. At the beginning of the march, the workers filled the terminal area with slogans holding posters, banners and placards. The march, which started from there, circled the important roads of the city and ended in front of the municipality office. Later, NCP leaders joined the rally at Shaheed Daulat Maidan located in the Public Library premises.
