Nafi (9), a first-grade student who was injured in an air force fighter jet crash near Milestone School and College in Uttara, has died. Earlier, his sister Nazia also died in the same incident.
Nafi breathed his last at 12:15 am on Tuesday (July 22) while undergoing treatment in the ICU of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Nazia and Nafi lived with their parents in the Kamarpara area of Uttara. Nazia was studying in the third grade and Nafi was studying in the first grade at Milestone School and College.
The matter was confirmed by Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon of the National Burn Plastic Surgery Institute, at night. He said, Nafi, who was burned in the Uttara plane crash, died in the ICU while undergoing treatment at night. 95 percent of his body was flame burned. Earlier, his sister Nazia died at around 3 am yesterday. 90 percent of her body was burned. So far, 11 students and teachers have died here in this incident. In addition, one student died in a burn at Dhaka Medical College.
The ISPR confirmed the death toll of 31 people as of 12 noon on Tuesday. The updated list of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said 27 people were killed, including 23 children. The death toll rose to 32 overnight.
Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum told reporters that many of the deceased have not been identified. 20 bodies have been handed over to relatives, while 6 have been kept at the CMH morgue. The body of the deceased pilot, Flight Lieutenant Tauqir Islam, has been buried in Rajshahi.
According to the ISPR list, a total of 165 people were injured in the incident. Of them, 8 are undergoing treatment at Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, 46 at Burn Institute, 3 at Dhaka Medical College, 28 at CMH, 13 at Lubna General Hospital, 60 at Uttara Modern Hospital, 1 at Uttara Crescent Hospital, 1 at Shaheed Mansur Ali Medical College Hospital, 2 at United Hospital and 3 at Kurmitola General Hospital.
The Ministry of Health said that while two of the patients admitted to the National Burn Institute have been transferred to a cabin, at least 10 of them in the HDU are in critical condition. Another 30 are undergoing treatment in critical condition.
The country's top medical experts are working to treat the injured. Pediatricians in particular have been specially included in the treatment regimen. The government said that doctors are also being brought in from Singapore for advanced treatment of the injured.
Singapore General Hospital has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Through that source, case reports of the patients have been sent. Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor, Professor Md. Sayedur Rahman said that a senior consultant and two nurses from that hospital will arrive in Dhaka on Tuesday (July 22) night.
