On August 5, 2024, Hridoy, a college student who was protesting for a point of demand for the resignation of the Awami League government, was shot dead. A year after the incident, a fire service diving team has launched an operation in the Turag River in the Kodda Bridge area of Gazipur metropolis to recover his body.
The deceased, Hridoy (20), was the son of Lal Mia of Alamgar village in Gopalpur, Tangail. He was a student in class 11 at Hemnagar Degree College. Along with his studies, he used to drive an auto-rickshaw in the Konabari area.
They began the rescue operation at 10 am on Thursday (July 24) in the presence of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Inspector Masud Parvez, the investigation officer of the International Crimes Tribunal case, is present at the scene and is monitoring the rescue operations.
Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defense Deputy Director Mohammad Mamun said that a diving team has started the rescue work.
Earlier, a police constable was arrested in this incident. His name is Md. Akram Hossain (22). He was working in the Gazipur Industrial Police. The police arrested him from the Parail area of Kishoreganj on Friday.
It is learnt that on August 5, Hridoy was shouting slogans against the government on Konabari Road. Seeing the presence of the police, Hridoy took a position on the side of the road. Some members of the industrial police were on duty there. They caught Hridoy from the side of the road and slapped him. At one point, the police opened fire and he died on the spot.
In that incident, Hridoy's cousin Md. Ibrahim filed a murder case with Konobari Police Station as the plaintiff. In the case, former Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League President Azmat Ullah, and Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League's former general secretary and former city mayor Jahangir Alam were named as accused in the order, and 250-300 unknown people were named as accused.
