Election Commissioner (EC) Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar said that Gazipur district has the highest number of voters. For this reason, the Delimitation Technical Committee has proposed to increase one seat in Gazipur. In addition, the committee has proposed to reduce one seat from Bagerhat district due to the low number of voters.
He made this statement to reporters at his office at Nirban Bhaban in Agargaon in the capital on Wednesday.
He said the technical committee has proposed to increase one seat in the constituency with the highest number of voters. The committee has also proposed to reduce one seat in the constituency with the lowest number of voters.
Md. Anwarul Islam Sarkar said that the expert and technical committee has recommended redefining the boundaries of 42 parliamentary constituencies, and the EC has decided to change 39 constituencies after considering everything. Considering an average of 420,500 voters per constituency, Gazipur has the highest number of voters, so it has recommended increasing one seat there and reducing one seat in Bagerhat, according to the expert and technical committee on parliamentary constituency delimitation.
He further said that Panchagarh 1 and 2, Rangpur 3, Sirajganj 1 and 2, Satkhira 3 and 4, Shariatpur 2 and 3, Dhaka 2,3,7,10,14 and 19, Gazipur 1,2,3,5 and 6, Narayanganj 3,4 and 5, Sylhet 1 and 3, Comilla 1,2,10 and 11, Noakhali 1,2,4,5, Chittagong 7 and 8, Bagerhat 2 and 3, Khulna (the previous one) have not changed. The boundaries of these constituencies will be redrawn, and if anyone has any objections, the final order will be made on August 10.
He said, according to Articles 119-124 of the Constitution, the commission is responsible for determining the boundaries for national elections. The opinions of experts are taken in determining these boundaries. The recommendations of the consensus commission are taken. An expert team is formed. The boundaries are determined by giving importance to various issues. Some information from the 2022 census is taken.
