Police have found another house belonging to former anti-discrimination student movement leader Abdur Razzak bin Sulaiman Riyad. They have recovered 298,000 taka in cash from that house. Police are also investigating other places where Riyad and his associates have extorted money.
A police official said, "We are investigating Riyad's further extortion. In addition, another house belonging to Riyad has been found in the Badda area. Tk 298,000 in cash has been recovered from there."
On June 26, Riyad and some of his associates went to former Awami League MP Abdul Kalam Azad's business establishment on Green Road. They threatened to create a mob and put a chain of shoes around his neck. Riyad then took a check of Tk 5 crore and a land deed from Azad. Azad was the MP from Rangpur-6 constituency in the 9th National Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have recovered four checks worth Tk 2.25 crore from Riyad's rented house in Dhaka. DMP's Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations Department Muhammad Talebur Rahman said this at a press conference at the DMP Media Center on Wednesday afternoon.
Samakal has found out that the four checks recovered from Riyad's house were taken from a former MP. The remaining checks worth Tk 2.5 crore are with Riyad's associates. The police have got their names and identities. Efforts are underway to arrest the others involved. Meanwhile, another case is being prepared against Riyad and his associates in the cheque recovery incident.
Another source related to the investigation said that the checks worth Tk 50 million taken from the former MP's business were supposed to be deposited in the bank in August. In addition, checks were issued from a company called 'Net Zone Private Limited'. However, the checks were not given to anyone's name. Only the signature and amount were written.
On July 26, five people, including Riyad, were arrested at the house of former Awami League MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan on charges of extortion. A case has been filed in this incident. Four people, including Riyad, are now on a seven-day remand. The other three people on remand are Ibrahim Hossain Munna, convener of the Dhaka Metropolitan Branch of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and members Sakadaun Siam and Sadab.
The Democratic Students' Union emerged as a student organization a few months ago at the initiative of the leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Before this organization was formed, Riyad was made the joint convener of the convening committee of the combined private university branch that the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement announced last February.
