Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has announced that the much-anticipated national parliamentary elections will be held in February.
He made this known in his address to the nation on Tuesday night.
He said, "On behalf of the interim government, I will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, requesting that the Election Commission organize the national elections in February 2026, before the next Ramadan. All of you should pray that all citizens of this country can successfully move forward in building a 'New Bangladesh' by conducting the elections in a beautiful manner."
He also said, "We, on behalf of the government, will provide all kinds of assistance and cooperation to ensure that this election is conducted in a fair, peaceful and festive manner."
The Chief Advisor said, "We will all start mental preparation and institutional arrangements from tomorrow to complete all the arrangements so that this year's election is memorable in the history of the country in terms of joy and celebration, peace and order, voter turnout, and cordiality."
He said, "I want to say a few words about voters in the election. This time, we want to ensure arrangements for expatriate voters to vote."
He further said, "The major reason why Bangladesh, which was completely devastated economically, has been able to turn around so quickly is the historic contribution of our remittance warriors. The Election Commission is making preparations to ensure their participation in the elections."
We want to ensure that women voters can freely and enthusiastically cast their votes across the country. We will take all measures to ensure that women voters turn out in droves at every polling station, he added.
The Chief Advisor said, "Due to the disenfranchisement of the people of the country, citizens have not been able to vote for the last 15 years. In this election, we want to vote with great joy along with our outstanding joy. In this election, voters who will be voting for the first time in their lives will go to the polling station amidst various festivities to make this day memorable for them. Among them, there will be new female voters, new male voters. Among them, there will be voters who could have voted 15 years ago but could not vote even once in their lives. Among them, there will be those who could have voted 10 years ago, 5 years ago but could not. And there will be a group of lucky men and women who qualified to become voters for the first time and immediately got the opportunity to vote."
